Custom site induction

Building a workforce-ready induction program before anyone sets foot on site

The problem

ACEN Australia was preparing to transition New England Solar (NES) (one of Australia's largest solar generation projects) from outsourced to fully owned and operated. With new employees and contractors starting in early 2026, a comprehensive induction program needed to be ready before anyone set foot on site.

The induction had to cover far more than standard onboarding. The program needed to address site operations and maintenance expectations, environmental responsibilities across biodiversity, waste and hazardous materials, and Aboriginal cultural heritage. NES sits on Anaiwan Country, between Uralla and Armidale in regional NSW, and the program needed to reflect the history, significance and protection of around 120 registered heritage sites on Country.

Each topic carried real compliance weight and needed to land with a mixed audience of employees and contractors, ranging from site technicians to office-based staff.

Our solution

Learnopolis was engaged to design and develop three custom eLearning induction modules in Articulate Rise:

  • Welcome to New England Solar: covering site purpose, operating principles and team expectations.

  • Environmental Responsibility at NES: covering biodiversity, waste, hazardous materials and incident reporting.

  • NES Aboriginal Cultural Heritage: introducing Anaiwan culture, heritage site management and on-Country protocols.

We worked closely with the NES transition team to build each module around NES-specific content, drawing on subject matter expert input, site-specific policies and management plans.

Scenarios were grounded in situations workers would actually face; responding to a media enquiry, protecting native wildlife during site operations, encountering a potential Aboriginal artefact. Sorting activities, decision points and matching exercises kept learners actively engaged throughout.

For the Aboriginal Cultural Heritage module, content accuracy and cultural respect were paramount. We worked with ACEN's Indigenous Participation Manager, and the Registered Aboriginal Parties reviewed and approved the final content. Their input shaped the language, tone and representation of Anaiwan culture at every stage.

All three modules were built to be accessible, mobile-responsive and ready for LMS deployment.

The outcome

All three modules were live and operational in time for the transition, with employees and contractors completing their induction before stepping onto the NES site, exactly as planned.

The Aboriginal Cultural Heritage module received strong endorsement from the Registered Aboriginal Parties: a meaningful measure of success for content where cultural accuracy and respect were non-negotiable.

"The RAPs absolutely love the induction."

Joey Chalk, Indigenous Participation Manager, ACEN Australia
