Clinical governance

Building clinical governance capability across a sector preparing for national accreditation

Solution imagery: Learner challenge, to apply the new knowledge and use the templates in their practice.
Solution imagery: Case study to bring the content to life, and the module map of the program.

The problem

Primary Health Tasmania is responsible for commissioning community-based healthcare service providers to deliver high-quality clinical care across the state. With the release of the National Safety and Quality Primary and Community Healthcare Standards, the sector faced a clear challenge: providers needed to understand clinical governance not as a compliance exercise, but as a framework for continuously improving the safety and quality of their services.

While accreditation to the standards was voluntary, Primary Health Tasmania recognised that building sector-wide capability was essential, and that the existing content landscape in this space was doing little to help. Most clinical governance resources were dense, dry and difficult to apply in practice.

Our solution

Working in partnership with Emerson Health, a specialist healthcare consultancy, we developed four video-based learning modules for Primary Health Tasmania's online Learning Hub, available to all health professionals across the local network.

Each module combined:

  • Engaging graphics and narration to make complex governance concepts accessible.

  • Real-world scenarios to contextualise the standards in everyday clinical settings, showing providers what good clinical governance looks like in practice.

  • Reflection questions and actions to help providers start embedding the standards in their own service.

  • Supporting resources including self-assessments, improvement plans and worked examples to support application beyond the modules themselves.

The content was deliberately designed to feel different from the typical compliance material in the healthcare sector; practical, scenario-led and focused on what providers could actually do, rather than just what the standards required.

The outcome

The modules are hosted on the Primary Health Tasmania Learning Hub and available to all health professionals across the network. The response from commissioned providers was strong enough that Primary Health Tasmania engaged us for a further phase of work: three facilitated full-day workshops across Tasmania to embed the learning and kick-start quality improvement planning in commissioned providers.

"Jen and Nicola are a dream to work with. The training modules we produced together were very well received. There were quite a few comments about how pleasantly different these deliverables were compared with most other content in this space."
