The power of choice in adversity

Viktor Frankl famously said:

“Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms - to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way.”

This insight holds incredible weight in learning and development. Especially in times of uncertainty, change or challenge, mindset becomes the hinge that swings the door either shut, or wide open.

Teams navigating:

  • Restructures

  • New systems

  • Tight compliance demands

  • Low morale or change fatigue

… will respond very differently based on one thing: how they think about it

Why should organisations care? Because a team’s mindset is the soil learning either thrives in or withers. You can deliver the best-designed training in the world, but if people don’t believe growth is possible or worthwhile, nothing sticks.

One way to build mindset in your team? Celebrate effort over outcome. When leaders recognise curiosity, perseverance, and learning from failure - not just perfect results - they send a powerful signal: growth matters more than getting it right the first time.

When has a shift in mindset changed the game for you or your team?
